De rode ibis leeft in groepen in mangroven, moerassen en ondiepe meren van het noorden van Zuid-Amerika. Zijn lange, gebogen snavel is uitstekend geschikt voor het zoeken naar voedsel dat verstopt zit in modderlagen of tussen stenen. Hij eet vooral krabben, kreeften, insecten en kleine vissen. De prachtige, heldere kleur dankt hij aan kleurstoffen in zijn voedsel. De ibis slaapt en nestelt in bomen, vaak samen met reigers. Het slordig uitziende nest bestaat uit takjes. Meestal legt een ibis drie eieren. Een jonge ibis is lang niet zo fel gekleurd als zijn ouders. Hij is bruin met wit.
